Time slips away from me here

I have been the slackest blogger ever these last 2 weeks.. The days here in Chiang Mai easily roll into one another. I spend my day volunteering at a home for single mothers, looking after youngsters & enjoying an afternoon nap with them after lunch, yet I am always too tired to blog! Too tired to do a lot! It's been 3 months since I left work so this daily routine is a change. It's good as I get to see more of the ebb & flow of life around me as Chiang Mai is reasonably touristy, especially in the centre.
The setting of the home is beautiful, further out of the city surrounded by rice fields & a bit of construction work. Most of the women have come there from hilltribes surrounding northern Thailand. It's very fascinating to learn about these tribes, their differing beliefs, culture & dress. I found out that apparently the long neck women that are sold as a Thai hilltribe tourist attraction are smuggled here from Myanmar.. Human slavery, a human zoo.. Terrible. Won't be going to see that then.
Around Chiang Mai I would recommend (besides ensuring you come here for Songkran) going for a day or morning at an elephant park/sanctuary. It depends what level you want to get involved but you can spend the day as a ma-hoot or just watch. The hills around here are beautiful and driving through them is almost spiritual,  to see nature's beauty. The Golden Triangle is a fair hike from here, it was a ten hour round trip but on the way you can stop by hot springs, a wonderful glistening white temple, and Chiang Rai. The Golden Triangle is the boarder of Thailand, Myanmar & Laos that has the Mekong river running between them all. I have to say I felt deep in the heart of Asia. I loved being there but there is little to do but relax & enjoy the view. Unless you want to cross the boarder & go into Laos or take a boat ride up the mekong. When we got up there our car would not start. It was a slightly stressful situation being five hours from home with limited help available! Though after we let the beast cool down it obediently started again!
The road rules are observed well here in comparison to some other countries I have been driving in. It's reassuring for long drives.
This weekend am headed to Pai, a city that is probably another tourist mecca, though I have heard it is beautiful & the road there involved some 725 turns. It is in the mountains & close to the boarder of Myanmar.
My lovely friend Canada has rejoined me after her stay in Malaysia & I am so happy to see her familiar face again!
There are limited crazy stories to tell of here so far.. This is good. I am really just trying to relax & live simply. I like to think I am succeeding. Don't even think I've had a proper hangover here. This weekend may change that.

Chiang Mai

Well i'm in Thailand, arrived in time for the last day (and the biggest day) of Songkran.
Everybody must get to a Songkran festival once in their lifetime! AMAZING! It's the Thai new year and they celebrate it with water. Equals a city wide water fight where no one is safe from being drenched in bucket loads of ice cold and dirty water! Add loud music, smiling Thai faces & a bit of chang or singha & you have a huge party!
I can't stumble on the energy to write much right now but I made no entry last week. I want to write soon. Maybe tomorrow night. I spend my days working (voluntarily) and my evenings heading out to find good places to find vegetarian food. It is quite a mission it feels to get into the city. Always waiting around for a songthiew (local transport). I can't write anything right now. Will do it later...........

Grand Prix goodness in KL

11/4/2011
Sitting on the Air Asia flight from Kuala Lumpur to Kota Kinabalu. Feeling quite shabby today! Canada & I have had a very full on five days in KL. We left Jogja on Wednesday. Arriving into KL was like being on another planet in comparison to Jogja. It took a little bit of time to re adjust to so many foreigners (caucasians), cars, bars, bright lights & busy streets. The night time hum of KL was very differernt to listen to rather than the call to prayer. I could almost say I miss it..I do miss the Jogja life but this has been great so far. We spent Wednesday evening/night wandering around KL, from Jalan Petaling in China Town & down through to Little India. Of course all of the friendly taxi drivers that we asked for directions told us it would be too far away to walk, it was fine. It was amazing to eat Indian food! Dahl & garlic naan.. Though we accidently did order about seven dishes by mistake! It is a pretty pricey city after Jogja. The twin towers looked amazing when lit up night. After dinner we were completely bloated and over full, so perused the markets to try and find some formula one t-shirts or hats. It didn't seem like there was anything to buy, that was disappointing. So I decided to ask a man in his stall. He hurriedly & somewhat secretly went and got a McLaren shirt. The stall owners said that the police were cracking down on them selling fake formula one parafenalia. We managed to barter down the prices of our shirts, from 160 for one down to 90. We may have gone lower I'm sure if we persisted but we would have spent at least an hour or more bartering & searching for different shirts. Thursday we went out to Batu Caves (which has been upgraded since I was there in 2005) where we watched the hungry monkeys clambering for food/scraps/taking bottles out of people's hands. We then ventured up to the top of the KL tower where we watched the sky line light up from day into night. It was a great time to go. At 930pm we went to eat in an Arabic restauarant where I ate beans!! A big bowl of green beans in a tomato sauce. Amazing. I have missed beans. I have enjoyed being spoilt for choice of cuisine and being in such a mulitculural city. We decided to walk through Bukit Bintang & stumbled across a bar where a very interesting man was getting his groove on to middle eastern music. I have never seen such amazing hair flicking or pelvic tilts. Teamed with mohjitos & apple sheesha, this was a great setting!
Friday we headed to our first day at the grand prix in Sepang. We decided to buy the cheaper tickets for transport to get to Sepang, since Sepang is really far from the city. We opted to take the train to avoid road traffic but we got the communter train instead. Little did we realise the trip would take up twp hours in total from the moment we left Bukit Bintang via monorail to KL Sentral, then via train to Nilai, then a 'shuttle' from Nilai to Sepang. Ahh it was exhausting to do twice a day! Friday was a pretty mellow day at the GP. Not too many people there. The stands are open to everyone so it was possible to have a really great view of the practice laps. They were so loud & we both forgot earplugs! If only we had read more about the program we could have done a pit lane walk on Friday evening. That would have been amazing. I need to stop skimming over things and actually read them. Friday night... what did we do? I can't remember.. Maybe that was the Mohjito & sheesha night. Saturday was a fun day at the track, Canada & I decked out in our Redbull & McLaren shirts & began our rivalry. There were a lot more people there but Sunday was another atmosphere altogether. We left the hostel at 9am as we were expecting lots of road traffic for the bus shuttle & we wanted to get there in time to get autographs at midday. We made it in time & joined a massively long line to get autographs. Two hours later we were closer to the end of the line but just as the last group of drivers ended their autograph session!. It was so hot there was sweat dripping down my back. We started on the beers earlier in the day & continued at a steady pace until 3am! Well I reached my fill of beer probably closer to 10pm but sipped slowly I assure you. The atmosphere of everyone's anticipation & groups of people dresses to represent their driver's country or team was great. Of course there was a reasonable sized group of Finnish men getting drunk & being rowdy. We joined them for a beer. They were impressed to learn of my Finnish blood. The englishmen, not so much so. But I did bag most of the englishmen there since they were all going for McLaren. We finally pulled ourselves away from taking random photos with anyone who looked interesting to watch the start of the race. We managed to get up higher to watch a lot of the race and watched from the grandstand that cost 500 dollars. It was hard to get a clear view of the race because there were so many people up there standing to watch. I missed the start of the race! It was disappointing. Canada (who knows nothing about the GP) thought that the practice lap was the start, so she was snapping away photos & was confused why there were swerving all over the track. The race went so much faster in comparison to how it feels when I watch it on TV. As in the time of the race. Did not feel like 120 minutes! The pits were really good to watch and we got a good view of the end, where Redbull prevailed.
The after concert was a laugh. The artist Rain is a korean r&b singer who has 7 albums out and is also an actor. Of course ummm it wasn't the best. We spent most of the time drinking beer & playing beer wars with a Queenslander & an Englishman. We were the only rowdy people there really. We got yelled at 'Show some respect' by some people but we were too tipsy to stop! I think I bought one round of beers, it was nice not to pay. Met some Irish lads & the six of us headed back to KL & kept drinking until 3am & Canada & I didn't spend a cent.
Severely hungover when I woke up from five hours sleep this morning. Made our way to LCCT to fly to Kota Kinabalu with five minutes to spare.. something I don't enjoy!
Now we're here, in northern Malaysia. Plenty of tourists around but the people are much nicer to strangers here than they were in KL.More random smiles & greetings. I like that. Wandered around a marketplace and ate CHICKPEAS!!!! Ohh so good to eat them again. For the next couple of days I'm not sure what we'll do but I am keen for some beachside hanging out as Chiang Mai is landlocked & April is a 40 degree month.

....saya menulis sedikit di Bahasa Indonesia.

I decided to write out my little talk I made at the schools in Kota Baru, just so I had record of it for myself :) I will no doubt lose the paper I wrote it on as I travel.
Fill in the gaps as you please.

Selamat Pagi, nama saya ___________. Umur saya duapuluh lima tahun.

Not bad for eight years without writing any Indonesian. I only made a few mistakes when I wrote this out with no help other than a small dictionary. I was pretty proud of myself :)
You can google translate it for yourself if you wanna know what I wrote!

My last day in Jogja, until June.
If you have been reading this blog (or know me) you know I have to move on from Jogja tomorrow morning. Staying in Asia but decided to travel and volunteer while my man is doing eight weeks of work on Mt Merapi. My visa also expires on Thursday.
This last week in Jogja has been good fun, although I became sick in Borneo last weekend, and in turn made all my housemates sick too.
We managed to do it a bit of partying last week, that may have hampered our recovery. Especially the loud karaoke that lead me to lose my voice, followed by a big boozey party the next night. Honestly I didn't do much more than that during the week- I needed to rest.
Saturday I had put my hand up to volunteer at what I was told was an orphanage. When I was picked up from Jalan Kaliurang, it turned out it was for a school camp at an Orangutang rehabilitation centre an hour out of Jogja. The camp was to encourage the school kids to use their english and be inspired to pursue their futures as they grow into adolescents. I had no idea that there was the orangutang rehab centre in Jogja, they could increase their profit by promoting tourism. Although I felt it was not such a good experience as in Sarawak, it would attract tourists who've never seen them before. It was a pity their cages were so small. I felt sad for them but I'm sure it is better than some other circumstances they would have been in otherwise. I enjoy working with children & it has been very rewarding doing so over here. I look forward to Thailand & helping out there. Hand hygiene will be interesting though.. I need to buy some gloves for nappy changing etc.

I can't believe it's been eight weeks & I'm leaving. I like the community we have here but I really do need more to do with my time. If I had found a regular volunteer job I would have tried again with my visa & stayed because I really like it here now. But the world is vast & so much of it is is close to me here in Asia that it would be a pity not to explore it!
Plus GP this weekend! I am following Redbull to cheer on an aussie since Kovalainen doesn't seem to be top knotch at the moment. Woo can't wait... And I am excited to eat different foods. Indian food in KL is goodness. And a bit of shopping too. I would like a new bag & shoes.. yes I am excited for KL. Kota Baru should hopefully be relaxing and it will be great to spend a few days close to the beach before I head to landlocked Chiang Mai in northern Thailand with it's 40 degree days in April.
Still undecided after that.. Laos perhaps.. Cambodia.. whatever is easiest to get to. Must sort it all out today.
Sampai nanti Jogjakarta! Sampai Juni... Saya rindu semua kawan-kawan saya baru di sini dan juga saya pindu pecar (suami) saya.
